Bruce Milletto, CEO of Bellissimo Coffee InfoGroup and a leading industry watcher, thinks the company's motivation is more basic: Starbucks is returning to its roots as a comfortable "third place," a living space that goes beyond the home and the office. "People want to have ‘their' coffee bar, and they want to have ‘their' coffee," says Milletto, who remembers when Starbucks was a hip chain of four or five shops. "Starbucks has realized that's a niche they're no longer filling."
Bruce goes on to say, "Once you have thousands and thousands of stores, it's difficult to have consumers look at you in the same way," Milletto says. "I think in coffee, the small independent will always win out if it's doing a fantastic job."
Though the recession has hurt some coffee sales, it hasn't ended
Americans' move toward higher-quality coffee, says Bruce Milletto,
president of Bellissimo Coffee InfoGroup, which provides consulting and
training to the industry. "Our taste buds have memories," Milletto
says. "Once you drink a really excellent cappuccino, it's very hard to
go back even to a chain store that may be using automatic machines."

Bellissimo Media, specialists in video production for the specialty coffee industry, has won two 2001 Telly Awards for its productions The Passionate Harvest and Everything BUT Coffee. The Telly is one of the most sought-after awards in the TV, commercial and video industry. Video & Film & Program winners in last year's competition included Dick Clark Productions, Touchstone Pictures, DreamWorks SKG, Miramax Films, Warner Brothers and HBO.
The Passionate Harvest , a video co-produced by Kenneth Davids chronicling coffee production from seed to cup and shot on location in Guatemala, Brazil, Kona and Ethiopia, was the winner of a Telly Bronze award. Less than 10 percent of over 11,000 entries were presented with this honor. "To be recognized with a Telly along with some of the major players in TV and video confirms that Bellissimo is a cutting-edge production company," said Bruce Milletto, president of Bellissimo Coffee InfoGroup and the video's director. In February, the same film won the "Best New Product Award" at Coffee Fest Las Vegas.
Everything BUT Coffee, Bellissimo's new video for the specialty coffee retailer covering the non-coffee-related aspects of the business, also received a 2001 Telly Bronze Award. The Telly Awards was founded in 1980 to showcase and give recognition to outstanding non-network and cable TV commercials. The competition was expanded several years ago to include film and video productions as well as non-network TV programming.
This brings Bellissimo's 2001 award count to three for productions featuring training or marketing for the specialty coffee industry. The Passionate Harvest retails for $79.95 and Everything BUT Coffee for $69.95. Wholesale discounts are available.
